Undercurrents present the 2026 master of fine arts graduates from Laguna College of Art + Design who revive time-honored skills as they create relevant and personal contemporary art. They understand that the value of skillful drawing and painting, as taught at LCAD, enables them to accurately see and effectively communicate.
These artists are contemporary storytellers who employ timeless skills along with a modern personal sensibility. They share a complexity born of a nuanced perception of the physical world. Although their artwork is based in careful observation, they all exhibit an imaginative subtext that belies the rational contemporary world. Rather than posit confident assertions, they offer thoughtful questions that touch on our enduring cultural legacy, uncertainty, change, and the value of embracing the here and now. Like a celebration with undercurrents of serenity, joy, unity, and melancholy, these works of art offer a rich and nuanced view of living and creating in modern times.
These individuals: Taylor Blue, Sydney Golba, Emilio Monahan, Joseph Todorovitch, Juri Umagami, Xiaoxue Walker and Yanbo Wang are among today’s most promising emerging artists.
This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Laguna College of Art+ Design.
