Women’s History Month Celebration
Laguna Beach Cultural Arts
As part of its Women’s History Month celebration, the Laguna Beach Cultural Arts presents a screening of Silkwood (1983), the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film based on the true story of Karen Silkwood.
Starring Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, and Cher, Silkwood tells the powerful story of a working-class woman who risks everything to expose unsafe practices at a nuclear facility. What begins as a personal awakening becomes a national reckoning about truth, accountability, and the cost of standing up to powerful institutions.
Directed by Mike Nichols, the film remains deeply relevant today—raising urgent questions about whistleblowers, corporate responsibility, and the courage it takes to speak out when silence is safer.
The screening will be followed by a brief, moderated discussion reflecting on the film’s themes and their resonance in today’s world, particularly through the lens of women’s leadership, integrity, and moral courage.
This event is part of a month-long Women’s History Month series at the Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center, featuring film, theater, discussion, and literary voices that honor women who challenged the status quo—and changed history.
Women’s History Month at the Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center is generously sponsored by Ann Quilter and Charlie Quilter for the second year in a row. We are deeply grateful for their continued support of the arts and for making this important series possible.
