Family Art Studio at Laguna Art Museum

Family Art Studio at Laguna Art Museum

Laguna Beach is a town founded on the idea of free expression through art.

It is a place that has such great natural beauty that it is nearly impossible to NOT find inspiration when one visits. Hosting some of the founders of California impressionism like Frank Cuprien to modern local art festivals (FESTIVAL OF ARTSSAWDUST ART FESTIVAL and ART-A-FAIR), Laguna Beach’s history of being a hot bed of creativity continues. LAGUNA ART MUSEUM carries this artistic tradition on with their permanent California landscape exhibit, cutting-edge art installments and now, their Family Art Studio.

Kid Art Studio Laguna Art Museum

The Family Art Studio monthly FREE program at the museum that gives kids of all ages the opportunity to see, interact and create art in a variety of artistic mediums. Each session in the program features an art project that is based on, and highlights, an artist that is on exhibit at the museum.

One month, the Family Art Studio program was centered on Elizabeth Turk’s Sentient Forms. Turk, an Orange County native and award-winning artist, explores the recurring themes of time, matter and space through varied artistic mediums. The exhibit included her x-ray mandala LED illuminated prints that show off repetitive patterns in nature. These prints served as the inspiration for the Family Art Studio project for the month.

Several long tables were set-up in the ‘California Gallery’ where all the supplies for making our own watercolor mandalas were available. The museum staff and volunteers were on hand and extremely helpful in guiding us through each step of the process of creating the mandalas. My son began working right away with a clear idea of what he wanted to have as his finished piece. Other kids relied on printed examples of mandalas and stencils to find their inspiration. Everyone was creating art and that’s what’s so wonderful about the Family Art Studio, it brings out your inner artist.
