Recognized as the only California-based hotel on the list
Casa Laguna Inn & Spa today announced that it has been chosen by AAA inspectors as one of their favorite hotels that celebrate America's history. As a way of helping travelers connect with the nation's history, AAA inspectors assembled a list of 46 distinctive historic hotels - structures of notable record or architecture, typically 75 years or older. The inspectors then created a list of 10 favorites
Casa Laguna Inn & Spa was originally constructed in the 1920s as a private residence, with additional buildings added in 1946 as a motor-inn style Laguna Beach hotel. The buildings and grounds were used by artists throughout much of the 20th Century as both a refuge and a unique vantage point on California's sea coast. Remodeled in 2000 and operated as a bed & breakfast inn since that date, Casa Laguna is currently ranked as the number one hotel in Laguna Beach, based on Trip Advisor reviews. Earlier this year Casa Laguna was chosen by Travelers' Choice as one of the top 25 small hotels in the United States, as well as a top 10 hotel for romance. The Inn was also recently recognized by bedandbreakfast.com as one of the top 10 small luxury inns in the world.
Long-time Casa Laguna General Manager, Kathryn Mace, stated she was very excited about this newest accolade. "The AAA award is particularly special," said Mace, "Not only because it comes from such a widely-recognized and respected travel organization, but also because we are particularly proud of our beautiful Mission-style buildings, some of which predate the famed Pacific Coast Highway that runs past our front door."
Due to the style of construction and the materials that were used when building the two Casa Laguna structures that date from the 1920's, Mace and others believe they were built by one of California's premier builder/architect teams, Frank Miller and Arthur Benton, who collaborated to produce a magnificent seaside "castle" on the cliffs just west of today's inn. The distinctive pressed blocks used in the construction of that edifice, now called Villa Rockledge, perfectly match the beautiful and historic multi-shade blocks visible today on the Casa Laguna exterior.
