Blue Whale Migration Summer 2024

Blue Whale Migration Summer 2024

Newport Landing Whale Watching

The annual “Giant Blue Whale Migration” brings hundreds of blue whales each summer/early fall to the waters off Laguna & Newport Beach.  We are already seeing blue and fin whales in 2024 with great sightings stating in April and continuing as of mid-May 2024 !  Last summer we had over 580 whales were viewed of which 110 were the giant blue whales. Giant blue whales were once considered quite rare off southern California, but this has changed dramatically with hundreds of giant blue whales spotted each summer. These giants of the sea reach lengths of up to 90 feet and are the largest of all animals. Along with viewing these giants view the second largest whale in the world, the finback whale which is often seen feeding in the same areas as the blue whales. Other whales encountered include humpback whales, and minke whales. Along with whales, giant pods of common and bottlenose dolphin are also very likely with pods numbering in the hundreds to over one thousand frequently viewed.  These “mega” pods of dolphin are quite an amazing sight to witness with what seems like the whole ocean filled with jumping dolphin as far as you can see.

Why is the whale watching so good off Laguna & Newport Beach? Just outside of Newport Bay is the beginning of one of the largest marine protected areas in southern California created to protect this rich ecosystem for future generations. The protected marine sanctuary covers over 60 square miles off Newport & Laguna Beach and provides a haven for all marine creatures including whales and dolphin.
