Now in its 11th year, the Laguna Dance Festival has become an icon of the thriving art community in Southern California and specifically, Laguna Beach. Starting September 10th, Laguna Dance Festival will be showcasing a week long festival celebrating the diverse world of dance.

This year the festival has brought in two renowned dance companies to share the headlining bill; Malpaso from Cuba and the San Francisco-based ballet, LINES. Each brings a unique flavor mixing the classic with contemporary, while creating a moving piece of beauty.

Maplosa Dance Company

From Havana, Cuba, Malpaso Dance Company is a charismatic new force in contemporary dance. The New York Times called them, “both humble and sparklingly present — and remarkably strong all around, with the men and women doing equal lifting.” The 10 member company of contemporary dancers collaborates with leading international choreographers and nurtures new talent. The Laguna Beach Dance Festival will be their debut in the Western United States.

See them in two performances at The Laguna Playhouse on September 10th and 11th at 7:30pm.

LINES Ballet

Artistic Director Alonzo King is a ballet visionary and his San Francisco-based company, LINES, always astonishes with classical elegance and bold new ideas. King is known for his collaborations with noted international composers, musicians and visual artists to create works that draw on a diverse set of cultural traditions. Laguna Dance Festival Founding Director, Jodie Gates, has been a longtime friend to King and even danced in one of his pieces when she was with the Joffrey Ballet.

See LINES Ballet at The Laguna Playhouse on September 12th and 13th at 2:00pm.

Laguna Dance Festival

The Laguna Beach Dance Festival goes beyond the performances and provides educational opportunities for the dancers. Jodie Gates says, “I look forward to the Laguna Dance Festival having a large impact on our youth and being a significant part of the town both for entertainment and for education.”

This year dancers will have the opportunity to take three Master Classes at the Laguna Beach High School Dance Studio.
